K & D U3A GARDENING GROUP PROGRAMME 2018 

We meet on the last Wednesday of the month

Meetings/Talks: 2.30-4.30pm at Kibworth Grammar School Hall Pay on the day

Visits: Make your own way there for the times as specified Payment due one month in advance

Coach Trips: Leave from KGS Car Park at times as specified Payment due two months in advance

Please put money/cheque payable to K & D U3A Gardening Group in an envelope annotated with your name, amount and event it is for. 

Please note no refunds will be given for cancellations within one month of the Visit/ Coach Trip date

31 January: Meeting - Talk on Building a Show Garden
Rutland Willows proved most entertaining speakers when they visited us four years ago. This time, John Shone and Martin Keeley will be describing how they created and built a Show Garden at the Sandringham Flower Show. There will also be a free prize raffle. Admission is £3.
28 February: Meeting - Talk on the Restoration of Middleton Hall Gardens
As prelude to our visit on 26th September, a member of Middleton Hall’s team will be telling us about the history and recent restoration of the 17th century Walled Gardens with lush, colourful, texturally rich planting. Admission is £3.
28 March: Coach Trip to Holme Pierrepont Hall and Gardens, Nottinghamshire
Leave KGS at 9am. Tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival before a Guided Tour of this early Tudor Manor House. Then free time to explore the gardens. Highlights include Spring blooms in the restored 17th century East Garden; the Grade 11 listed, Victorian Courtyard Garden; and a Woodland Walk. Depart at 2pm. The all inclusive cost is £18.

25 April: Coach Trip to Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire
Leave KGS at 9am. Tea/coffee and an introductory welcome on arrival, before a Private Tour of the house by owner George Buchanan, whose family has lived here for 250 years. He will guide us through the ground floor reception rooms, telling anecdotes about life at Hodsock over the centuries, as well as exploring the bridal suite bedrooms and behind the scenes in the cellars. After a 2 course light lunch and coffee/tea, we are free to explore the gardens and the bluebells in the wood. Depart at 3pm. The all inclusive cost is £37.

30 May: Coach Trip to Arbury Hall and Gardens, Warwickshire
Leave KGS at 9.30am. Sir Roger Newdigate transformed his beautiful ancestral Elizabethan mansion into a breathtaking example of early Gothic Revival architecture in the late 18th century and the gardens into the informal style of landscape gardening. We will have a Guided Tour of the house, followed by tea and cake, before free time to explore the gardens, including the picturesque Rose Garden which should be in full bloom. Depart at 3pm. The all inclusive cost is £20.

13 June: Visit to the Gower House and Dripwell House, Guilsborough, Northants NN6 8PY
Meet at the Gower House at 2.30pm. The garden is closely planted with specimen trees, shrubs, perennials, orchids, thyme lawn, wild flowers and alpines. A soft fruit and vegetable garden is
shared with adjacent Dripwell House. We will have tea/coffee and biscuits after exploring both gardens. Depart at 4.30pm. The all inclusive cost is £6.

27 June: Coach Trip to Spetchley Park Gardens, Worcestershire
Leave KGS at 9am. We will have a Guided Tour of the gardens, designed by Ellen Willmott, horticulturalist, plantswoman and first lady to receive the RHS’s Victorian Medal of Honour. From quintessentially English to unmistakably Mediterranean, the plant treasures inspired Edward Elgar’s Dream of Gerontus. The billowing borders of perennials and tender exotics should be in full bloom. Free time to visit the small tea room, plant sales and gift shop. Depart at 3pm. The cost is £17.

25 July: Coach Trip to Sulgrave Manor and Pettifers Gardens, Oxfordshire
Leave KGS at 9am. Tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival at Sulgrave before a Guided Tour of the Tudor and Georgian house, built by President George Washington’s ancestors. Then free flow the Arts & Crafts grounds, formally planted with yew hedges; herbaceous borders; orchard; rose and vegetable gardens. At 1.30pm drive to Pettifers, which owner Gina Price began creating in 1984 and has been described as one of the Country’s most exciting and delightful gardens. After an Introductory Talk, free time to walk round the large drifts of perennial flowers and grasses, which open up to amazing vistas beyond, followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. Depart at 3.30pm. The all inclusive price is £29.

29 August: Coach Trip to Bodenham Arboretum, Worcestershire
Leave KGS at 9am. The family began creating the arboretum in 1973. Owner and co-founder, James Binnian will take us on an hour’s Guided Walk at a relaxed pace on mainly flat ground through this oasis of plantations, pools and avenues, beautifully landscaped with over 3000 trees and shrubs from all over the world. We are then free to explore the arboretum further and visit the restaurant, if desired. Depart at 2.30pm. The cost is £17.

26 September: Coach Trip to Middleton Hall and Garden, Warwickshire
Leave KGS at 9.15am. Tea/coffee and biscuits and an Introductory Talk on arrival before a Guided Tour of the Hall. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Elizabeth I stayed at Middleton in 1575. It was also home to natural historians, Francis Willugby and John Ray. Then free time to explore the nature trails around the lake, a Site of Special Scientific Interest; the beautiful formal gardens including a heated Walled Garden; and the Courtyard’s craft shops and cafe. Depart at 3pm. The all inclusive cost is £18 (£12.50 for HHA members).

31 October: Meeting - Talk on Year Round Colour in the Garden
Owner of Planting Partners in Oakham, Rutland, Amanda Banfield has degrees in Horticulture, Garden Design and Land Management, and is a member of both the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and the Gardeners Guild. She will explain how to extend the flowering season for
Colour In The Garden Throughout the Year. Admission is £3.
28 November: Meeting - Christmas Social
Enjoy a festive tea; watch Mary’s DVD looking back over our visits during 2015-2016; and participate in a light hearted Quiz for prizes. Admission is £3
