Programme for 2014

We convene on the last Wednesday of the month -

Meetings: 2.30-4.30pm at Kibworth Grammar School (KGS)

Visits: Make your own way to venue for 2.30pm start.

Coach Trips: Leave from KGS Car Park at times as specified.

Payment is due two months in advance. Please put money/cheques – payable to K & D Gardening Group - in an envelope annotated with your name, amount and the trip.


29 January

Talk by Stephen Ashpole from  the Desborough District Wildlife Trust, entitled Is Organic Gardening Better For Wildlife? Admission £3.


26 February

Talk by Phill Egan A local Kibworthian, Phill is an RHS qualified gardener and enthusiastic plantsman with more than 20 years practical experience. He will explain how he came to set up Little Eden Garden Services to help gardeners maintain, design and develop their own piece of Eden and answer questions. Admission £3.


26 March

Visit to Goadby Marwood Hall, near Melton Mowbray, LE17 4LN The owners redesigned this NGS garden in 2000, based on 18th century plans. The landscaper trained under plantswoman Rosemary Verey at Barnsley House. Highlights include a chain of 5 lakes, several interconnected walled gardens and a lakeside woodland walk. Admission £5. Tea and cake £2.


30 April

Half Day Coach Trip to Felley Priory After an introductory talk, we will be free to explore this tranquil 2.5acre garden for all seasons, nestled in beautiful rolling countryside and one of Nottinghamshire’s best kept secrets. If we are lucky, the wood should be carpeted with bluebells.  The nursery sells rare and unusual plants and cottage favourites featured in the garden. Refreshments are available from the farmhouse tea shop. The coach will leave at 12noon and return from Felly Priory at 4pm. Cost: RHS Members £5; non-members £8.50.


28 May

All Day Coach Trip to Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park The garden was created by Sir Eric Savill, grand master of the woodland garden in the 1930s with the support of King George V and Queen Mary and continues to develop under Royal Patronage. HM The Queen opened the Rose Garden in 2010. We will have free time to explore the 35 acres of interconnecting ornamental gardens and woodland, which include National Collections and rare international species with an afternoon coach tour of the private Valley Garden. The Savill Building houses a gift shop, gallery cafe and restaurant. The coach will leave at 9am and return from Windsor at 5pm. Cost £21.


11 June

Visit to Rolleston Hall Gardens, Rolleston LE7 9EN An eclectic mix of old and new feature in the 6 acre gardens of this family estate including a lovingly restored traditional walled garden with box lined beds of vegetables and flowers, working glasshouse, fruit trees, beautiful mixed borders and ravishing roses. The lakeside walk offers stunning views. Admission £4.


25 June

Half Day Coach Trip to Melbourne Hall

Laid out by royal gardeners London and Wise in 1704, Melbourne is a near-perfect example of an early 18th-century English garden, influenced by the French style of Le Nôtre. The terraces, circular bassins, palisades of limes, intersecting allées, and famous yew hedge, are complemented by unique lead statues, the Four Seasons Urn cast for Queen Anne and a wrought iron Birdcage arbour. The visitor centre houses a gift shop and tea room. The coach will leave at 12.30pm and return from Melbourne at 5pm. Cost £9.50.


30 July

Visit to The Old Hall, Market Overton, LE15 7PL Overlooking Catmose Vale, stone walls and yew hedges divide this NGS garden into enclosed areas set over four levels featuring herbaceous borders, shrubs and trees. In 2006 the lower garden was planted with new shrubs to create a walk with mown paths. The terrace and lawn give a great sense of space and enhance the view. Admission £4. Tea and cakes £3.50.


27 August 

Half Day Coach Trip to Elton Hall and Gardens Owned by the Proby family since 1660, we will have a Guided Tour of this extraordinary part Gothic house with its treasure trove of magnificent furniture and fine paintings. The garden, laid out in 1913, has been restored and a sunken garden, shrubbery, arboretum, Gothic orangery and arbour created. The Walled Garden Plant Centre houses a tea room and gift shop. The coach will leave at 12noon and return from Elton at 5pm. Cost £15, includes a Guided Tour of the Hall.


24 September

Visit to Glendon Hall, Kettering, NN14 1QE This delightful NGS garden features mature specimen trees; topiary; box hedges; herbaceous borders stocked with many unusual plants; and large walled kitchen gardens complete with restored glass house. Admission £3. Tea and Cake £2.


29 October

Half Day Coach Trip to Rowena Garden Centre, Rothley We will have a talk about Caring For Indoor Plants, followed by a light hearted prize quiz and cream tea. There will be free time to shop amongst the centre’s seasonal plants, Xmas trees, festive decorations and other great present ideas. Places are limited, so names needed by the end of August please. The coach will leave at 12.30pm and return from Rothley at 4.30pm. Cost £7.50. 


26 November

Talk by Mike Konig A Bonsai expert, he will cover the history and give us a ‘low tech’, informal  demonstration on the techniques and procedures to grow and shape Bonsai, detail suitable species of tree, and answer questions. This will be followed by tea and mince pies. Admission £3.


28 January 2015

Talk by Helen Osbourne Owner of Church View Nursery, Barkby and ‘Down To Earth’ panellist, she will advise and answer questions on Spring planting and perennials and tell us about life on the show.  Admission £3.
