From our Chairman

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, it is now time to think about replacing those members of your Committee who wish to step down in January. As thing stand now there is a need to replace 3 or 4 members and it would be really useful if their replacements could be people who have not previously served on the Committee. Such people bring in new ideas and help to develop our U3A to keep it thriving. At the end of this newsletter you will find a nomination form for a member of the new Committee that will start at the end of the January meeting. It is preferable to nominate and get agreement for a candidate today and hand the form in to any member of the present Committee. There will be spare copies of the form available at the registration table. It would be very helpful if the nominee has an email address, as this makes the running of the Committee so much simpler and more efficient. If you cannot do this today, then please hand in the nomination form at, or before, the December meeting. I look forward to seeing some new blood on the Committee in the New Year.

Those of you who like quizzes will be pleased to hear that next year, in addition to the normal mini-quiz at the monthly meeting, there will be two major quizzes, when we devote the whole afternoon to a table quiz. Clive and I will be hosting one of these events each during the year and I’m sure we’ll all have an enjoyable time.

Following this month’s Open Day. Our next monthly meeting will be our 5th Birthday and Christmas Joint Celebration. There will be a celebration cake, and lots of demonstrations and activities which will be going on during the course of the afternoon, including Stephen’s much anticipated photographic show. Do come along and enjoy an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

This is a social bridge group where we try to learn something most weeks but our main aim is just to socialise and play rubber bridge. We welcome players of all levels and will help players from many years ago to update to ACOL bridge and help learners to improve.

We play Chicago about once a month.

We play in the Lounge at the Grammar School Hall every Thursday 2.30 to 4.30 pm. Plenty of car parking. Our beginners table has started and there is still room for a few more so please contact me if you would like to learn

Our Chicago winner last month was Audrey Harvey.

Bridge Tip of the Month

If it’s your turn to open with a 4/4/4/1 hand with 12 or 13 points – PASS

If you have 14 points or more open 1C if you have a red singleton or open 1H if you have a black singleton

If partner responds in your singleton suit then you will have to risk a NT response

If your opponent opens with your singleton suit, then you have a good reason for a takeout double.

If your partner opens in one of your 4 suits then fine, if in your singleton, then again you will have to risk a NT response.

4/4/4/1 hands cause everybody problems

Calligraphy

We will begin making Christmas cards, and later this year will look at illuminated capitals, and also be exploring colour in calligraphy by looking at writing with a brush.  Dates of forthcoming meetings: 22 November,

Gardening

Last month our popular guest, Angela Holland from the Kibworth Garden Centre, entertained us with inspiring ideas for creating winter colour in our gardens, including planting up containers and tips on preserving perennials with an awesome chop!

We are together again for the last time this year at our Members’ Only Christmas Meeting on 30 November at Kibworth Grammar School between 2.30 - 4.30pm. Many of us enjoyed visiting Vicki Tuffin’s delightful garden at Cedar Farm, and Vicki will be giving us a Christmas themed demonstration. Other highlights include a light-hearted prize quiz and a chance to pick each other’s brains during a question and answer session over a festive tea. Launched at the U3A Open Day, copies of our 2012 programme will also be available.

We reconvene in the New Year on 25 January at 2.30pm in KGS, when Gill Hadland, will be regaling us with her experiences of becoming Runner Up in the BBC’s Gardener of the Year 2009 Award.  Meantime Mary and I would like to thank you for all your support during the year and wish you a very Happy Christmas.

Line Dancing

Every Monday afternoon at 2 pm in St Wilfrid’s Church Hall.  Come along and take a look at the fun we have!  Although some of us have been dancing for 5 years now, we are always happy to welcome and encourage beginners to the group. In October five of us joined 30 other dancers at a teaching weekend in Scarborough.  I was so proud of my dancers – they mastered all the new dances shown and joined in with all the old favourites.  We all enjoyed the exhausting weekend of two evenings of social dancing and two morning workshops!

Music Appreciation

We are a friendly little house group, who all share an interest in varying types of music. We meet twice monthly to play and discuss music of a chosen subject. Recent selections have included music about transport, the weather, food and drink and moods. Future subjects will feature locations and a seasonal meeting. Unfortunately, this group is full at present but if you are interested please contact me. If there are enough people who show an interest, there may be scope for a second group.

Painting

The Art Group continues to meet on a Friday afternoon at 2 pm in the Methodist Church Rooms. We contribute £2 towards the cost of hiring the room. A big thank you to Roger who helps to sort out our venue. Here are the dates for your diary: Nov 11th and 18th, Dec 2nd and 9th. Details for next year's date will be shown in the following newsletter. We use many different methods and art materials to create original pieces. We are all learning from one another and the group is stimulating and friendly. Please come and look at some of our work in the U3A Exhibition to see if this group might suit you. We stop for tea and biscuits and even share the washing-up. This is an excellent place for finding out about local Art shows. For more detailed information contact me.

Poetry

We meet on the first Wednesday morning of the month to look at the life and work of poets chosen by the members.  At our November meeting we really enjoyed reading the work of Edith Sitwell, an amazing woman whose poetry was thought provoking, sometimes amusing and always interesting.  Her use of the English language was quite unique!  In December we will be having our Christmas buffet whilst reading poems with a wintery theme.

Walking Group

In October the group enjoyed a walk led by Alan and Marion from the Rose and Crown at Tilton on the Hill across field footpaths to a cutting on the nearby railway line which displayed for us a wondrous collection of fossils.  This was rounded off with an excellent lunch at the pub.  At the beginning of November David and Nicola led us on a short walk preparatory to a meeting at the King's Head, Smeeton Westerby to discuss future walks and organisation.  At the meeting, Ros Holmes, our Group Leader since inception five years ago, handed over her responsibilities to Mike.  He paid tribute to Ros's efforts in setting up the Group and encouraging its expansion from a few people to more than twenty, even though she is heavily involved in other matters inside and outside K&D U3A.

We intend to continue the pattern of walks, with a longer one (5-6 miles) on the first Friday of each month, a shorter one (3 miles) on the third Friday and "Further Afield" on fifth Fridays.  People wishing to take part in these walks should inform the walk leader not less than two days beforehand giving a contact phone number in case there has to be a late change in arrangements.

Any member who would like to take part but is without transport please contact Mike or a group member.

We plan to have another Away Break for Walking Group Members, probably in September.

By the time you read this, another session about how to prepare for leading a walk, including Map Reading for the Terrified, will have taken place.  Other members wishing to take part in future, please contact Mike.

The next few events will be

Friday 18th November - a shorter walk from the Dog and Gun at Keyham.  Walk leaders Pat Thomas                            0116  279 1524, pakthomasuk@yahoo.co.uk      and

Chris Taylor                            0116 272 0590,  chrisataylor@talktalk.net

Friday 2nd December - a longer walk TBA - contact Mike

Friday 16th December  - a shorter walk and Christmas Lunch at the Rose and Crown, Tilton on the Hill. Contact
