                        This month’s meeting – Tuesday 20th September

         Clive’s Big Quiz

Our monthly meetings take place in Kibworth Grammar School Hall, on the third Tuesday of the month, 1.45 - 3.45 p.m.

Forthcoming meetings for your diaries include

October 18th                         Vietnam                     Prof Sue Ablett

A talk about the wonders of the orient with all that Vietnam has to offer – temples, stunning scenery, delightful people, the Vietnam war. Finishing off in Cambodia with a floating village and a visit to the amazing temples of Angkor Wat.

November 15th                             Open Day

Come and see the range of our interest groups from displays and demonstrations!

And on December 20th             our 5th Birthday celebrations!!!

See below on how you can help with our memories of the last five years.

From the Chairman

September is a time of reunification and renewal for our U3A members. Groups that have been dormant during the Summer months are revived and members who have taken a break return to the fold full of enthusiasm and raring to go!

Due to the logistics of seating and organising displays it has been decided not to hold our 5th Birthday celebrations on our Open Day, which will retain its existing format. The Birthday festivities will now be held in conjunction with our Christmas celebration, which give everyone a bit longer to get their photos to Stephen Poyzer (see below) for his slide show.

We have been invited by Kibworth Beauchamp Parish Council to participate in the Queen’s Jubilee festival in June 2012. It is proposed to organise events in the village and our U3A has been asked if we can add anything to the breadth of the celebrations. We may be able to provide demonstrations of some of our activities in halls around the village and it will be useful in bringing some publicity to our groups. It is very early days at present and there will be meetings to organise matters but watch this newsletter for future information regarding what I think will be a worthwhile and enjoyable occasion for us all.

The reactions of members to the new seating arrangements seem to have been very favourable and we intend to continue this. We are trying to encourage more members to attend our monthly meetings and to enrol in our U3A and to this end you may have seen some new posters around the village. If there are any members who live in any of the outlying villages and are able to display one of our posters, would they contact Ros Holmes or myself and we will even provide the pins for the notice board!

Martin Crofts, Chairman

Our 5th Anniversary

Reminder –this autumn is our fifth anniversary

We are collecting digital images for a slide show.

If you have any U3A related photographs please forward them to Stephen as soon as possible.

A message from the Treasurer

Cliff would like to remind members that K & D U3A annual subscriptions (£10) are due by 31st October.  He is happy to receive your monies at this or next months meeting.

News from Interest Groups

New Group: Flower Arranging Course

The group will meet in St Wilfrids Church Hall on 26 September and 17 October at 7pm. The meetings consist of demonstrations and a chance to do your own arrangement. For any further information please contact Joyce Huntley

Existing Groups

We will start again on 25th October from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm at Fleckney Sports Hall.  Please note we welcome beginners and players from years ago who fancy trying their hand again. At whatever level you play badminton is a good all round exercise that can be played at a pace that suits yourself.

(Duplicate) Bridge

We would like more players to come to our "easy going" Duplicate Bridge sessions, which take place every Wednesday in St Wilfrid's Church Hall.  Start time 2pm prompt.  If you would like to come but do not have a partner please telephone me and I shall try to help.

John Ruddock                                                                                                                                0116 279 2331

(Social) Bridge Group

This is a social bridge group where we try to learn something most weeks but our main aim is just to socialise and play rubber bridge. We welcome players of all levels and will help players from many years ago to update to ACOL bridge and help learners to improve.

We play Chicago about once a month. We play in the Lounge at the Grammar School Hall every Thursday 2.30 to 4.30 pm. Plenty of car parking.

If there is sufficient interest we will run a beginners table for absolute beginners who have never played bridge before. Please come along if you are interested.

Clive & Joyce Huntley

We are resuming our study of Italics, and capital letters with flourishes, on 2nd and 4th Tuesday afternoons, from 2-4pm.

More information from

Ros Holmes                                                                                                                         0116 279 6010

Computer Club

The Computer Club will resume on Tuesday 27th September at 2pm to 4pm at the Kibworth Old Grammar School. Cost will be £2. The format will be the same as the last sessions with prompt sheeted projects that you can get help in completing or alternatively you can get help with your queries. Bring your own laptop or use one of the U3A machines.

All are welcome but as the sessions are not formal "teach-ins" they are not really suitable for complete beginners to computers. If you are a beginner please ring me so that you can learn the basics in a more formal way.

If you are interested in a formal course please ring me. No courses are yet arranged so the choice and level will be chosen with regard to demand. As usual the courses would run on the first and second Tuesday of the month from 2 till 4pm starting in October.

Rosanne Lane

Singing for Pleasure

The group continues to thrive under the inspired guidance of Faye Stringer.

The main aim is the enjoyment and fun of group singing whilst developing a knowledge of music. New members, especially a few more men, would be made very welcome. The group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month in St Wilfrid's Church Hall , 10am-11.30am.

 Sketch Club

After a short summer break the Sketch Club will be up and running again on Friday 23rd September from 10.30 in the morning until midday, and on the second and fourth Friday of each month afterwards.

This meeting will be at my house and as well as the usual mix of activities I'd like us to consider what else we might do as the weather begins to get colder and the prospect of open-air sketching becomes less and less appealing.

Please bring something to draw on and something to draw with.

If you haven't been to a sketch club meeting before but think you might like to join us this autumn, please telephone

An Inviting Opportunity from HOST

People come from all over the world to study at universities in the UK. Apart from gaining academic qualifications, they hope to immerse themselves in the life, language and culture of this country; only to find that the university is not the best place to achieve this. The ‘real Britain’ is found outside the campus, in local communities, and above all, in people’s homes. You can get to know what makes a country tick by chatting to the natives, cooking and eating with them, asking their views, and seeing their views when they take you to their favourite local places. And in sharing their own culture with their hosts, students can make their countries come alive too. Hosting a student for one weekend, or at Christmas, or just for a day, makes a personal and meaningful contribution to international understanding and goodwill. U3A members make ideal hosts! If you would like to know more, please visit, or call HOST on 020 7739 6292.

HOST is a national charity founded in 1987 by the British Council, the Victoria League and the Foreign Office. Hosting students is a voluntary activity.

The national U3A magazine is sent out three times a year; to find out about what’s going on in between times, see the website: for on-line courses and further information.

Our Newsletter will be ready for collection at the monthly meeting, or, if you are not able to go in person, will be available from either Kibworth or Fleckney libraries, as soon as possible after the meeting. An email copy will be sent to you instead of a printed copy, if you have requested one. If

you wish to receive the Newsletter, but can’t get to one of these libraries to collect one in person, or receive it by email, the Secretary is willing to send out a copy by post on receipt of a large s.a.e.  Please send your envelope to: Ros Holmes, 18 Main St, Kibworth, LE8 0NQ
