Members' and Groups' News
Michael Rodber resigns. Volunteer needed.
Dear members
I have made the hard decision to relinquish my role creating and managing the website and submitting contributions to the Kibworth Chronicle.
My publicity role started in August 2019. I created a brand new newsletter format and built an entirely new website.
At the time, I was a member of the committee, which I joined in February 2018. I have had the privilege of working with a number of great chairmen - Ron Spinks, John Freeland and currently Chris Bradburn, not to mention a whole raft of committee members.
Looking back at some key events:
In March 2020, we issued the coronavirus issue of the newsletter. Because of the pandemic, this was the last printed copy. After that, the newsletter was only continued on the website. A copy of one of the bulletins is shown.
In March 2021, the newsletter and website designs were changed to reflect the new u3a corporate identity.
The newsletter format was dropped in its entirety from February 2022 with everything being posted on the website, supported by brief updates in the Kibworth Chronicle.
It has been an interesting learning experience doing this job - I had never created a website before, but it’s only down to your contributions that have made this initiative work and I thank all those involved. I’ve enjoyed working with you.
We often hold on to things for fear of some sort of regret, but I think it’s time for fresh thinking. So please express your interest in taking over this job. Updating the website is a relatively simple task and you will work with some super people. The programme we use, Google Sites is very intuitive and I will be happy to help you if you wish.

£2,000 + raised for cancer charity
Jane Lacey (pictured far right) reports:
On 17th August at the Kibworth Community hub, I held my fundraising event for breast cancer - now for the second year.
A lot of hard work and preparation went into this as you can imagine, but with a massive amount of support from family, friends and the village, it was, yet again, a huge success.
On the day, we raised £1,182 which is an incredible amount. In addition, the JustGiving page is currently £700 + gift aid.
Therefore, the total at the moment is just over £2,000 which is amazing. I am keeping the JustGiving page open until the middle of September just in case anyone else would like to donate.
Thank you all again for supporting me in this worthwhile fundraiser and here’s to next year.
Poetry Group
Carol Townend reports:
In September the Poetry Group will be studying the work of former Poet Laureate John Betjeman. He is a great favourite and is sure to have us laughing a lot, although some of his work on preserving Victorian buildings and the steam railways is very passionate and serious.
The statue of him at St Pancras station captures his quirky personality
and always raises a smile.
CPR TRAINING
We will be running a training course in the use of CPR and Defibrillators.
It will be on the 1st October at 7pm in the Lounge of the Old Grammar School.
The training course will be a maximum of 2 hours long
You will not only get the theory but individual hands on experience with special dummies and defibrillator machines.
It will be run by a group of volunteers who specialise in this sort of training
The course will have a maximum of 20 places.
It is free to Kibworth U3A members.
Please contact Clive Huntley if you would like to attend this course. Preferably by email

Su's usual really nice contribution
A little boy called Teddy is crazy about tractors so Su did the picture for his birthday.
Landscape and Architecture Group
Stephen Poyzer and John Freeland report:
Group members (Mike and Shena Senior, Stephen Poyzer and Steve Bowyer) drove over to the far side of the county to view the Iron Age Fort at Burrough Hill on a particularly windy Thursday evening in early August.
We stopped off at The Stilton Cheese Inn in Somerby to quench our thirst on our way home.
The next outing for this group will be on Thursday 19 September when Steve Bowyer will guide us around Foxton Locks - a man-made structure designed to solve a specific problem posed by the immediate landscape.
Where is this?
Can you guess?
